Araucana wild colored
Araucanas were first discovered in Chile in 1890 and have been kept by the indigenous Mapuche people there for centuries. This chicken breed is characterized by its calmness and frugality and has around 13 different colours. The roosters reach a weight of up to 2.5 kg, while the hens can weigh up to 2 kg.
The breed characteristics of these exceptional chickens include:
- The lack of tail feathers due to the missing tail vertebra, which makes them stand more upright than other chicken breeds.
- “Bobbles” on the ears instead of conventional ear flaps.
- The characteristic pea comb.
These unique characteristics make the wild-colored Araucana a fascinating chicken breed with an exciting history and remarkable physical traits.

Araucana chickens not only stand out due to their unmistakable appearance, but also impress with their ability to lay eggs of extraordinary colors. As so-called “green layers”, they produce eggs in shades ranging from light blue to turquoise. Skilful crossbreeding, for example with marans, can even produce eggs in an olive green. The average laying performance of the Araucana is around 180 eggs per year, with the minimum weight of a hatching egg being 50 grams. This impressive performance makes it not only a sought-after breeding breed, but also a fascinating option for poultry lovers who appreciate the variety of uniquely colored eggshells.
